Chapter 17

Chaos rippled through the prison yard as a mystery enemy attacked me from the inside out. My veins burned like they had when Cortland and Aria forced me to drink those potions. I ripped my jacket off, but the cold air did nothing to cool the fire that consumed me.

Tristan’s navy eyes grew wide with fear. “Sloane! What’s wrong?”

Good question.

Another scream broke free as the veins in my arms seared bright red like lava flowed through them instead of blood. Tears leaked down my cheeks. Would the pain ever stop? Or would this be my life from now on?

A figure forced Tristan away and crashed to his knees in front of me. “Sloane!” Viktor gritted his teeth from the rush of agony destroying me.

“Sorry,” I muttered before another severe wave yanked a whimper from my mouth.

The crackling of magic echoed as the guards activated Viktor’s sizzle chokie and purple sparks flew off the metal circlet around his neck. Viktor didn’t notice the magical jolts because they paled in comparison to the intense throbbing ricocheting through every part of me. He felt that more than anything.

“Back off!” Balfour’s voice penetrated the disarray. “Let him help her.”

“That is not your decision.” Officer Jux wrapped his hand around Viktor’s bicep to tear him away.

But Viktor wasn’t having it.

He lifted his hand and used his air magic to send the guard stumbling several feet back. With a vicious snarl, Viktor gripped the sizzle chokie, his muscles straining, and broke the thing in half, dropping it on the concrete.

Holy shit. Did Viktor’s strength have any limits?

The unseelie prince pulled me close and used his ice power to cool me. A ragged gasp broke free as some of the burning receded. I stared into Viktor’s glowing, wintery orbs.

That’s it, Sloane. Concentrate on me.

His voice in my head soothed the anguish a little more, and I leaned into him as his ice began to break the fire’s hold. The lava in my veins calmed, and they disappeared back under my skin.

Without a hint of energy left, I crumpled against the unseelie prince.

“Let’s get her to the medical ward.” Balfour’s voice seemed far away, like I was at the bottom of a vast tunnel.

“This is not protocol.” A harsh voice belonging to one of the shifter guards sliced through the bedlam.

Tension snapped over the air as power radiated through the former warden. “He’s taking her to the medical ward unless you’d like to try and pry her from his arms. I wouldn’t suggest it if you’d like to remain in one piece, though.”

The shifter warily studied the unseelie prince who trembled with a mountain of rage and power poised to be released should anyone take another step closer.

“Fine.” The C.O. tossed his massive hands up. “I’ve had enough of trying to keep this asshole from the seelie-dae. Let him take her.”

Had Ren instructed them to keep us apart?

Viktor lifted me as he stood, cradling me against his chest. A hiss slipped out as my body protested the movement, but as soon as the pain settled, I snuggled into the prince’s hold.
